Emily Carter
Editor-in-Chief | Vegan Lifestyle Advocate | Storytelling Strategist
Portland-based editor who believes words can nourish change as much as food can.
My Story
From the time I was scribbling in my childhood notebooks to the late nights editing university publications, I understood the power stories hold.
But my path took on a deeper purpose when I transitioned to a vegan lifestyle over a decade ago. Suddenly, writing wasn’t just about style—it was about substance.
They needed clarity, practical strategies, and editorial voices that could guide them through the overwhelming swirl of wellness advice. That’s where my career shifted from publishing general lifestyle content to spearheading vegan-focused editorial platforms.
The Turning Point
It wasn’t one single lightning-bolt moment but rather a series of everyday challenges that woke me up to the bigger picture.
Juggling career demands while raising a young family, I realized that living plant-based required more than enthusiasm—it needed systems and support.
Instead of making things more complicated, I wanted to simplify, streamline, and create tools that felt supportive and practical for real people with busy lives.
Shortly after, I took on a senior editorial role for a vegan publication that grew faster than any project I had ever led. That experience showed me the potential of storytelling to not only inform but to build community and momentum around lifestyle change.
What I Learned the Hard Way
I used to believe passion alone would carry me through this journey. But passion without systems quickly leads to burnout.
There were months I worked 70-hour weeks, pushing deadlines while neglecting my own wellness. Ironically, I was writing about balance while living completely out of it.
I also came to understand that conversations around veganism can sometimes divide rather than unite. Learning to create space for nuance, empathy, and respect has been one of my toughest but most valuable lessons.
My Approach Now
Today, my approach to editorial leadership and vegan advocacy is rooted in accessibility.
Whether I’m curating recipe features, editing in-depth investigations on food systems, or mentoring new writers, I focus on clear messaging, supportive guidance, and values-driven storytelling.
My mission now is to help people feel that plant-based living can be both inspiring and manageable—something they can weave into their daily routines without guilt or overwhelm.
What I Believe
- Storytelling is one of the most powerful tools for lifestyle change.
- Compassion—for animals, the planet, and ourselves—should guide every choice.
- Change is most sustainable when it’s gradual, inclusive, and realistic.
